AppliedSensor/Sensata Air Classification Module Now Being Integrated in Select 2007 Sports Activity Vehicles to Provide Cleaner In-Car Air, Prevent Intake of Harmful Fumes

[Business Wire] Warren, New Jersey – April  23, 2007 –  AppliedSensor, a provider of chemical sensor components and modules, and Sensata Technologies, a developer of industrial sensors and control solutions, announced that their Air Classification Module (ACM) is now being integrated into the 2007 BMW X5 Sport Activity Vehicle to provide occupants with cleaner in-car air.

The ACM prevents the intake of harmful combustion fumes – such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and a range of volatile organic compounds – which are often undetectable to humans. The module includes a built-in sensor with two separate sensing elements to enable continuous detection of the presence of diesel and gasoline exhaust fumes faster and more reliably. Through integration of a corresponding module in the air intake duct of the vehicle’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system (HVAC), the sensor can signal accurately timed, automatic activation of air circulation to the vehicle's controls.

According to Geert Braaksma, managing director of Sensata, integrating the ACM into the BMW X5 is just the beginning. “On the basis of close contact with all key decision-makers in the global automobile industry, as well as with air conditioning systems manufacturers worldwide, the ACM has applications that are not limited to just one vehicle type or industry,” Braaksma said.

AppliedSensor Marketing Director Tom Aiken concurs. “By using micromachining to improve the production and packaging processes, we can produce high volumes of low-cost sensors for air quality control for homes and buildings, as well as sensor technology for packaging and food control, medical devices, security systems, and process control,” Aiken said.

Both Aiken and Braaksma said that the two companies are looking forward to working together on future projects.

"AppliedSensor’s extensive experience in alternative applications for detection elements and sensors, their compatible range of products for air classification applications, their technical know-how and comprehensive research facilities were all significant factors in our decision to partner with them,” Braaksma said.
